Following a morning of conflicting reports, current Libyan Prime Minister Mahmoud Jibril confirmed that former Libya ruler Moammar Gadhafi has been killed in Sirte, a northern city halfway between Tripoli and Benghazi. Libyans rejoiced in the streets.

“We have been waiting for this moment for a long time,” Jibril said at a news conference in the Libyan capital of Tripoli. “Moammar Gadhafi has been killed.”

These two videos of Gadhafi’s capture are as grisly as the photos showing his dead body, but this is a truly historic moment of a fitting end to a man who ruled over Libya since 1969.

Early reports indicated that Gadhafi had suffered broken legs, others that he had been shot in the legs. Then reports began to circulate that was killed in the capture.

Multiple sources, including Al Jazeera, Libyan state TV, Reuters and NTC officials all reported later that Gadhafi has died as a result of his injuries. The body of the former dictator has reportedly arrived in Misrata, where it is being taken to a secret location for “security reasons.”

The interim government announced it will bury the body in a secret location in Libya.

Sources say that Gadhafi’s convoy was hit by a NATO airstike, which involved a U.S. predator drone and French airplane, which caused the fleeing former leader to seek refuge in a drainage pipe. The NTC claims (unconfirmed) that this is the drainage pipe where Gadhafi was found:

It’s been reported that 18-year-old Ahmed al-Shaibani, seen here wearing a New York Yankees cap (they’re everywhere!), found Gadhafi hiding in the pipe and shot him. He was later pictured with the Golden Gun he took off the deposed leader’s body.

The news comes shortly after Libyan fighters on Thursday captured the remaining positions held by Moammar Gadhafi loyalists in his hometown of Sirte. The skirmish, which lasted about 90 minutes, puts an end to the last major resistance by former regime supporters still holding out nearly three months after NTC forces overthrew the Gadhafi regime. Here’s the scene in Sirte:

Once news of Gadhafi’s capture/death rolled in, the scene looked like this:

The scene was not quite as joyous in Kabul, where CBS cameras caught Secretary of State Hillary Clinton at the exact moment she saw “unconfirmed reports” of Gadhafi’s capture:

President Obama addressed the American people on Thursday afternoon. “Today, we can definitively say, ‘The Gadhafi regime has come to an end,'” the president said. “The dark shadow of tyranny has been lifted, and with this enormous promise, the Libyan people now have a great responsibility.”
